5 Winning Ways in Using Word of Mouth Marketing for Small Businesses

Word of mouth marketing methods, such as business referrals and recommendations are not only powerful ways to grow your small business, but also the most cost-effective technique in promoting your enterprise. It only takes a few satisfied customers who feel happy to share their stories with others. With word of mouth marketing, it’s like having an army of happy customers who are all spreading great news and updates about your company. When this happens, you can find yourself gaining more business than you can imagine.

Here are simple things you can do to encourage a customer to promote your business through word of mouth marketing:

Go Beyond Expectations

In order to benefit from effective word of mouth marketing, you need to maintain exceptionally happy customers. It is not enough to do excellent work or provide a top-notch product. Providing consistent, comprehensive, and responsive customer service is  required. Sending your clients timely and relevant information that can help solve their problem or fulfill a need can make increase engagement. Getting to know your clients and their businesses are important so you can pitch in a customised solution. Always ask for feedback and respond immediately to any comments and suggestions.

Ask for Referrals

There are times that all it takes is to have the courage to ask for a customer referral. Explain your company’s vision or what you aspire to accomplish and how their referred leads are vital to meet your goals and plans. Make it simple for your customers to make referrals by providing all the information they may need, including your product or service lists, contact information,  business details, brochures, and other marketing collaterals. To keep up the referrals, always thank those who successfully refer a client and offer them incentives for every new business account that they bring in.

Spot Qualified Influencers

Among your professional and social networks, there are exceptional people who can grab the attention of others effortlessly. Naturally magnetic and respected, these are the types of people you want to support you. Learn to immediately spot these qualified influencers and reach out to them for support. Winning them over to your side can be invaluable to your word of mouth marketing campaign.

Refer Your Own Clients

If you know of other people who could benefit from the services of your clients, refer them to your other customers. The “I will scratch your back if you scratch mine” mentality is an effective business strategy. You can make an introduction and promote the relevant products or services to your network, then make referrals to your other clients whenever appropriate. This can create a trend of mutual referrals and benefit everyone in your network.

Focus on Relationships

Developing meaningful professional relationships with your clients will make it easier for people to recommend you. Value your customer relationships by being genuine, respectful, and truthful.  Since success doesn’t always come overnight, an effective word of mouth strategy requires a marketing plan and a targeted approach.
