Living in an area that is prone to flooding can be a nightmare for homeowners. But with enough planning and preparation, it is possible to make the rainy days headache-free at home.
Here’s a look at some tips for staying dry despite the approaching heavy rains.
1.Subscribe to flood alerts – there area available state-based flood resources residents could sign up for to stay informed of the situation and whether they are expected to get better – or worse.
2.Rearrange valuables and electrical items – prevent water exposure by moving stuff away from the windows and off the floors. If that’s not possible, at least cover them with plastic for better protection. If flooding is expected or is beginning to start, make sure to unplug electrical items and move them to higher ground.
For extremely valuable and irreplaceable goods, it is a good idea to give them extra protection by locking them away (in a safe) or storing them elsewhere (such as a family member’s home in a different location) if extreme weather is expected in the area.
3.Keep devices fully charged – when there is heavy rain and flooding, there will almost certainly be power outage. This scenario, despite being the worst case, must always be anticipated and prepared for. Charging everything that runs on battery power will help homeowners stay reachable and will enable them stay tuned for updates and to call for help in case of emergency.
It is also important to keep a list of emergency contacts and to have insurance policy documentation handy (and dry).
Still, the best way to prepare for storms and heavy rains is to do a property inspection and address all vulnerable spots ahead of time. This should help keep most, if not all, the water out and away from places it should not reach.
