Melbourne Tourism Valued at 3 Billion AUD

melbourne

Just how much is local tourism worth to Melbourne’s economy?

Exactly $3.7 billion according to new research commissioned by the City of Melbourne.

A report by Deloitte Access Economics has named Melbourne as Australia’s number one holiday destination for domestic overnight travelers.

The report also noted an increase in international overnight visitors, with the numbers increasing by over 10 percent over the year to September 2014.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle released the figures as Melbourne geared up to welcome thousands of interstate travelers for the AFL Grand Final.

Sydney is being credited as one of the major drivers of the boost, with Cr Doyle calling it “the powerhouse.”

He said it was necessary to keep ahead of the pack and that they’ve been pretty good at doing just that.

Half of Melbourne’s $8.5 billion in tourist dollars are derived from holiday makers that continue to give the city a major pull.

Helen Barrie, a 33-year old mother of two who is visiting Sydney along with her family, said when it comes to a quick getaway, Melbourne ticked almost every box. She said that in Sydney, it was about being seen, while everyone in Melbourne appears to be more self-assured.

Based on data from 2012 to 2013, business events are worth up to $1.2 billion to the Victorian economy each year, where 200,000 people are employed in the state’s tourism sector.

In Victoria’s economy, tourism contributes about $20 billion. It comes as no surprise why, for the fifth consecutive year, Melbourne has been awarded the title of World’s Most Liveable City.
